BATH — Bath Iron Works said on Tuesday it received a $7.5 million modification to an existing contract to provide engineering and design services for work on the USS Independence, a littoral combat ship.

The ship is designed to be used in shallow waters.

The work will largely be done at a General Dynamics facility in San Diego under a separate contract, Bath Iron Works said.
