It’s a new record, and the race is still months away. It took just four minutes, 58 seconds on Friday morning for online registrants to claim 4,000 slots for this year’s Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race.

This will be the 16th running of the race, founded by Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson and scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3, in Cape Elizabeth.

Residents of Cape Elizabeth claimed 600 slots on Thursday, and now runners have one more chance to get one of the approximately 6,000 openings. On March 22, runners can register for one of the 1,900 remaining bibs available through the lottery – which will be drawn on March 25 – at www.beach2beacon.org.

A record 6,117 runners from 17 countries, 44 states and more than 240 Maine cities and towns finished the 6.2-mile course last year. The race debuted in 1998 with 2,408 finishers.

Online registration for the Kids Fun Run will begin Monday, March 18, and continue through June 30. However, parents can also register their children at the Expo or on Race Day.
