BIDDEFORD — Police say an officer shot dead a pit bull after it bit him in the leg and then attempted to attack him a second time.

Biddeford Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk said the snarling dog lunged and bit the officer when he got out of his patrol car shortly after 11 a.m. today while responding to a complaint on Pool Street.

Fisk said when the dog tried to bite him again, the officer shot him. The officer, whose name has not been released, was not seriously hurt and returned to duty.

Dog owner Mary Rowe tells WCSH-TV that the dog never attacked the officer and that he shot the dog between eyes in front of her 12-year-old daughter.
