Bowdoin College to discuss Occupy Wall Street protest

A social movement that is sweeping the country is coming to the Bowdoin College campus in Brunswick.
Bowdoin College students will host an Occupy Wall Street “teach-in” on Tuesday.

A group of panelists, some of them Bowdoin teachers, will discuss the social and historical significance of the protest against corporate greed and the unequal distribution of wealth.

The forum is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in Sills Hall at Smith Auditorium.

Assistant visiting professor Nicholas Touloudis has been invited to be on the panel. He has been to Portland’s Lincoln on two occasions where he has spoken with Occupy Maine protestors.

“Clearly, they have touched a nerve,” said Touloudis, who teaches a course in social movements. “I actually was a little surprised that the movement went on for as long as it did. I may have misgauged people’s animosity toward banks and corporate America.”

Kristen Ghodsee, director of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program at Bowdoin, and Lisa Savage, coordinator of the Maine chapter of the activist group Code Pink, have been invited to serve as panelists.

Students organized the forum in hopes of raising awareness about some of the inequalities that exist in America.
