Police Chief David Lyons said Dilks was riding north on Route 302 with three friends at 5:22 p.m. when he climbed to a standing position on the seat of his red 2004 Harley-Davidson Night Train and began waving with one hand. Dilks lost control and was pitched over the handlebars in the crash.

Dilks, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene of severe head injuries, Lyons said.

Marjorie Loonie, 47, of Melrose, Mass., was riding her black 2006 Harley-Davidson behind Dilks and crashed as she tried to avoid hitting him, police said. She was taken to Bridgton Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she is listed in good condition. She also was not wearing a helmet, Lyons said.

Dilks, Loonie and two companions had just left the Trailside Restaurant. Police said they are still investigating whether members of the group had been drinking.

The four were visiting the area and were staying at the Keoka Beach Campground in Waterford, Lyons said.
