Cape E. sit-skier wins silver at national sprints

RUMFORD — Cape Elizabeth High School sophomore Christina Kouros won a silver medal today in the women's adaptive sit-ski sprints at the 2012 U.S. Cross Country Championships at Black Mountain.

Kouros, 16, finished second of four women in the .8-kilometer sprint competition won by Sarah Edwards, 37, of Winter Park, Colo.

Mikayla Briere, 20, of Lincoln, N.H., was third.

In men's competition, three military veterans who are members of the U.S. Paralympic Team swept the top spots. Sean Halsted (Air Force) of Ephrata, Wash., came in first, followed by Dan Cnossen (Navy) of Topeka, and Andy Soule (Army), of Pearland, Tex.

Fourteen sit-skiers and two stand-up skiers competed in the adaptive races today.

Competition continues Thursday at Black Mountain with a men's 15K freestyle race scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., a women's 10K freestyle at 11 a.m. and adaptive sit-ski races of the same distances in the afternoon.
