SOUTH PORTLAND — Portland and South Portland fire departments are honoring firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The departments along with the Portland Veteran Firemen’s Association are holding their annual remembrance service in South Portland on Sunday. The ceremony, which was first held in 1892, takes place the first Sunday in October.

Organizers will read the names of 20 Portland firefighters and two South Portland firefighters who have died while on duty.

This year’s ceremony is also the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Portland Veteran Firemen’s Monument.

The service begins with a procession to the monument and concludes with the laying of floral wreaths.
