AUGUSTA —  Maine environmental-health activists say they’ll press state officials to consider a new rule eliminating the chemical bisphenol-A from containers of infant formula, baby and toddler foods.

The Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine today announced a signature collection effort to press the Board of Environmental Protection for a new rule regulating bisphenol-A. The group also released results of tests they said show BPA in containers of baby and toddler food sold in Maine. BPA has been linked to cancer, learning disabilities and obesity.

In response, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce said BPA has been thoroughly tested and has a safety track record of 50 years.

The Maine Legislature last year made the use of the chemical illegal in baby bottles, sippy cups and other reusable food and beverage containers effective Jan. 1. The alliance gradually wants BPA phased out of all foods.
