CASCO — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office tactical squad had to be mobilized Monday afternoon when police went to arrest a Casco man, who was known to be in possession of several firearms.

Sheriff Kevin J. Joyce said 38-year-old Matthew Peterson was arrested without incident at his home on Lakewood Road in Casco.

Peterson was arrested on a warrant charging him with domestic violence assault, a Class B offense. He was being held Monday night without bail at the Cumberland County Jail.

Joyce said that Peterson allegedly assaulted and strangled his girlfriend at their home early Saturday morning.

Police became aware of the assault after a deputy stopped to assist a disabled vehicle around 1:49 a.m. on Route 302 in Casco.

The vehicle’s driver, Peterson’s longtime girlfriend, told the deputy she was trying to get to a friend’s house after being strangled by Peterson. At the time, she was with their young son.

She told the deputy that Peterson became angry with her after she returned from an evening out with friends.
