Several early afternoon arrivals and departures have been canceled at the Portland Jetport as a result of an intense winter storm in the mid-Atlantic states.

Flights from Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey have been canceled starting at about 2 p.m., according to the Portland Jetport web site.

The National Weather Service was forecasting moderate to heavy snow from the Appalachian Mountains through southern New England Tuesday with temperatures 10 to 25 degrees below normal.

Paul Bradbury, jetport manager, said the location of the storm has a significant impact on Portland, even though it is not in the path of the bad weather.

“The unfortunate side is, when we have a mid-Atlantic storm, it’s fairly punitive for us because Washington and New York are our two top markets,” Bradbury said.

Airports like Washington National are so busy, as soon as they have to clear the runway for snow, it causes delays. Some of the cancellations are in anticipation of those delays, Bradbury said.
