LEWISTON — The corporate owner of six Denny’s restaurants in Maine is now allowing customers to use restrooms consistent with their gender identities.

The new policy is due to an agreement with a transgender woman who sued the company after being told she couldn’t use the women’s restroom.

The agreement was announced Monday by Realty Resources Hospitality, which owns the Denny’s restaurants, and the Boston-based Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders.

Brianna Freeman of Lewiston filed a complaint in 2009 claiming the restaurant had discriminated against her when she was barred from the women’s restroom at the Auburn Denny’s.

According to the Sun Journal, Freeman said the important thing is that Denny’s is now welcoming transgender people in a way “that is consistent with how we live our lives.”
