Officials investigate fatal accident at industrial site

State police and the York County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fatal accident that occurred Wednesday night at an industrial site in Dayton.

Maj. William King, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said one person was killed. King was unable to provide the victim’s name or describe in detail what happened.

King said the accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at Dayton Sand & Gravel on Goodwin’s Mills Road.

King said the business produces hot top during the summer. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified, King said.

PORTLAND

Lane of Veterans Bridge to be closed for drain repairs

PORTLAND — The southbound lane of the new Veterans Memorial Bridge will be closed Thursday night so that crews can repair the bridge drainage system.

The closure, which will begin at 7 p.m., will last through the night. Traffic lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. Friday.

Traffic will be detoured along the Fore River Parkway.

Former TD Bank employee admits to embezzling

A former bank employee accused of embezzling more than $14,500 from TD Bank in Auburn in 2010 pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland to a charge of bank theft.

Tasha Hilts, 28, of Auburn waived the indictment process and pleaded guilty at her arraignment before Judge Nancy Torresen.

Hilts is free on bail, but faces as much as 30 years in federal prison. She is scheduled for sentencing on April 3. While employed by the TD Bank branch at Great Falls Plaza, Hilts used her employee sign-in and password sometime between Aug. 13 and Sept. 2, 2010, to manipulate her savings account, according to a criminal complaint by FBI Agent Paul Pritchard.

TD Bank discovered on Sept. 2, 2010, that Hilts had overdrafted her account by more than $23,000, for a total loss of nearly $14,535, according to the criminal complaint.

TD Bank representatives confronted Hilts on Sept. 3, and she admitted that she manipulated her account balance to shop for clothes and furnishings for her new apartment.

Mountains of new snow put slopes in cheery mood

Maine’s ski areas are cheering this week’s storms that have dropped more than a foot of snow on their slopes.

The Ski Maine Association says Sugarloaf and Saddleback ski areas have each received nearly 30 inches of new snow since Sunday, while Sunday River and Mount Abram each got more than a foot.

The association says Shawnee Peak in Bridgton received 9 inches of snow, while Hermon Mountain outside of Bangor and Big Rock Mountain in Mars Hill each received 8 inches.

Executive Director Greg Sweetser says with the forecast calling for more snow and cold temperatures ahead, all downhill ski areas in Maine are expected to be open for the upcoming school vacation week.

YARMOUTH

Officials probe burglary at Hannaford pharmacy

The pharmacy at the Hannaford on Route 1 in Yarmouth was burglarized sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday but it was not immediately clear what had been stolen, police said.

A Hannaford employee reported the burglary at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday. An inventory was still being done to determine what was taken, according to Yarmouth Police Chief Michael Morrill.

Hannaford said that the supermarket remained open, but the pharmacy was closed to assist police in the investigation. Morrill said the investigation was still in the early stages and additional details would be released later. As part of the investigation, police went on the roof. He did not elaborate.

Police have suspect in theft of $8,200 from Scout troop

Police are investigating the theft of $8,200 from a local Boy Scout troop over a two-year span. Chief William Lawrence says a troop leader reported the theft a couple of months ago.

He says a suspect has been cooperating with police, describing how the money was taken. Lawrence told the Bangor Daily News that he will present the case to the district attorney and seek charges through a grand jury in the coming weeks.  He said the suspect could face felony theft charges.

Toddler bit by family dog expected to recover fully

The grandmother of an 18-month-old boy who was attacked by the family dog in their home last weekend says the child is recovering well.

Destiny Enman told the Sun Journal that her grandson was bitten on the top of his head and forehead by the dog, an American bulldog and husky mix.  The dog was previously reported to be a pit bull-wolf hybrid.

Enman was also bitten as she rushed to help the boy. The child and the grandmother were taken to a hospital in Lewiston where they were treated and released.

Enman says the boy is not expected to have any permanent injuries.

The animal was euthanized .

Police setting up sobriety checkpoints during holiday

Police will be watching closely for drunk drivers this holiday season.

Westbrook police will use a $10,000 grant from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety to set up sobriety checkpoints and put officers on duty – in marked and unmarked cars – with the sole purpose of seeking out drunk drivers, according to a press release from the department.

The dedicated patrols will continue through the holidays into the new year.

Shipyard’s new commander has experience, education

The Navy has chosen the next commander of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

The appointment of Capt. William Green was announced on Wednesday. Greene, who serves as the military deputy for shipyard operations at the Naval Sea Systems Command, will succeed Capt. L. Bryant Fuller this summer.

Greene is a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., who has served numerous engineering and combat systems assignments, including a posting at Navy shipyards at Puget Sound, Wash., and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

He holds a nuclear engineering degree and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida, and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and naval architecture and marine engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
