BOSTON — The EPA has begun five-year reviews of 16 Superfund sites across New England.
Superfund is a federal program to identify and secure uncontrolled environmental hazards at polluted sites. Evaluations are conducted every five years on previously completed cleanup and remediation work performed at Superfund sites to determine whether the remedies continue to protect human health and the environment.
If any problems are identified, the evaluations are used to recommend actions necessary to address the problems.
The sites to be reviewed include: Iron Horse Park, in North Billerica, Mass., the Nyanza Chemical Waste Dump, Ashland, Mass.; Saco Tannery Waste Pits, Saco, Maine; Kearsarge Metallurgical Corp., Conway, N.H.; Old Spring Landfill, Springfield, Vt., and Picillo Farm, Coventry, R.I.
