WELLS — An elderly Sanford woman was killed Thursday afternoon when the Buick LeSabre she was driving collided with a Jeep Cherokee and caught fire at Route 9 and Littlefield Road in Wells.

Sgt. Adam Shaw identified the victim as 85-year-old Lillian Kreitman of Sanford. Several passers-by tried to get Kreitman out of the burning vehicle but were unsuccessful. The collision forced her car into a ditch, where it caught fire.

Her passenger, 85-year-old Lorraine Cantalupo of North Weymouth, Mass., was in serious condition at Maine Medical Center.

The driver of the Jeep, 28-year-old Justin Parker of Wells, was not injured.

The crash, which remains under investigation, took place around 3 p.m.
