A Fayette woman will be nearly $1 million richer after claiming the jackpot winning ticket from the March 23 Megabucks Plus drawing, state lottery officials said Tuesday.
Bethany Struck chose the cash option for her $2,301,000 prize, which is worth $963,126 after taxes, according to the Maine State Lottery Commission. The ticket was purchased at the Cumberland Farms convenience store on College Avenue in Waterville.
A man that answered the phone Tuesday at Struck’s listed number said Struck wouldn’t comment about winning.
The tax rate on the winnings is 30 percent. The federal government’s tax rate is 25 percent and the state’s is 5 percent.
The outlet that sold the ticket gets 1 percent of the jackpot amount up to a maximum of $30,000. In this case, Cumberland Farms receives $23,000, and company officials have previously said bonuses would be given to the store manager and employees.
The last Megabucks Plus jackpot winning ticket in Maine was sold on Sept. 26, a few minutes up the road at the Big Apple convenience store in Fairfield. The winner, Linda Von Oesen, of Fairfield, collected a lump sum payment of $4,148,922.
The Tri-State Megabucks Plus game is played in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Last year the Maine State Lottery generated about $228 million in sales and transferred almost $54 million to Maine’s General Fund.
