Flag flies from repaired Fort Gorges pole

Repairs were paid for or performed by more than a half-dozen Maine businesses.

PORTLAND – The American flag is flying over Fort Gorges again, thanks to repairs paid for or performed by more than a half-dozen Maine businesses.

The businesses also worked together to repair the mainmast of the USS Portland, which is located at Fort Allen Park along the city's Eastern Promenade.

Both repairs were completed this week, city officials said.

The city said Cianbro, Horizon Solutions, Hertz Equipment Rental, Glidden Professional Paint, Spectrum Auto Body Supply, Gorham Flag, Maine Marine Supply and Hamilton Marine worked together to make repairs to both structures.

The Portland mainmast, taken from the heavy cruiser which was decommissioned in 1946, had more than a dozen holes due to exposure to the elements. The repairs, led by Cianbro, included patching the holes and repainting the mast.

The halyard for the Fort Gorges flag pole snapped during a spring storm this year. The businesses helped make repairs, installed new lighting and provided a flag to fly over the fort, which was completed in 1865. It was last used during World War II to hold mines and was turned over to the city in 1960.
