E. MILLINOCKET — A Florida woman who promised to help pay for repairs to her Maine hometown’s high school after she won a $590.5 million Powerball jackpot has made good on her word.
Town officials in East Millinocket accepted a $1 million check from Gloria MacKenzie on Monday.
School superintendent Quenten Clark says the 84-year-old MacKenzie has promised another $800,000 early in the new year, according to WABI-TV The state is pitching in $600,000.
The money will be used for a new roof at Schenck High School and to make the school accessible to the disabled. Work is scheduled to start next summer.
MacKenzie took a lump sum of $371 million that totaled $278 million after taxes. She lived in Zephyrhills Fla., when she bought the winning ticket in May.
