A good Samaritan boater pulled four people and a dog off a burning boat in Casco Bay Sunday afternoon.

Coast Guard Chief Matt Burt said no one was hurt in the incident off Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth.

The fire broke out shortly before 1 p.m. on a 39-foot Sea Ray Sundancer powerboat. A boater reported the fire to the Coast Guard, which responded to the scene, while another boater rescued the occupants of the burning boat.

The names of the boaters were not immediately available.

Burt said the Portland Fire Department and Portland harbormaster have created a safety zone around the boat.

Heavy black smoke could be seen billowing from the boat at one point.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, Burt said.
