Gay marriage law to take effect Dec. 29

Gay couples in Maine will be able to get married starting Saturday, Dec. 29, now that the state has certified the Nov. 6 election results, EqualityMaine announced today.

"The long wait for marriage for same-sex couples in Maine is almost over," said Betsy Smith, executive director of EqualityMaine, in a statement. "Before the end of this year, all loving and committed couples in Maine will be able to stand before their friends, family and community and make a lasting vow to be there for one another."

Mainers on Nov. 6 voted 53 percent to 47 percent to approve gay marriage, making Maine the ninth state to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry. The timing of the effective date of the law could not be set until Gov. Paul LePage certified the results, which he did on Thursday, according to EqualityMaine.
