Government seeks new owner for Maine lighthouse

YORK — The federal government is looking for a new owner for a remote 200-year-old lighthouse six miles off the coast of southern Maine.

The General Services Administration is seeking applications from government and nonprofit agencies to take ownership of Boon Island Light, located six miles off of York.

Officials tell the Portsmouth Herald that July 16 is the deadline to submit a letter of interest.

The 123-foot-tall lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard and licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation in Rockland. The foundation's board of directors hasn't decided whether to move forward to acquire the island.

Bidding for the lighthouse will be opened to the public if no suitable agency or group expresses interest.
