Greyhound Lines wants new station in Augusta soon

The airport location closed Dec. 20 when the agents retired.

AUGUSTA — Greyhound Lines is seeking another place in the city for a bus station after it closed its Augusta State Airport location when the longtime station agents retired.

A spokeswoman for the Dallas-based company said the station at the airport wasn’t a popular location, but the bus stop will likely remain for people who get off at the airport or board there if they’ve already purchased tickets online or by phone.

Greyhound closed the location at the airport Dec. 20 after Lynda and Mike MacFarland, who had been selling Greyhound bus tickets for more than 30 years, retired. The couple became agents for Greyhound in 1982, while they owned the Depot News in downtown Augusta, before moving in 2003 to the airport.

He also operated the adjacent Hertz rental car counter, which also closed when he retired.

A representative from Hertz said the company will reopen the rental car location soon.

Greyhound is one of two bus services in Augusta. Concord Coach Lines opened a bus terminal in north Augusta in 2008.

Lanesha Gipson, a spokeswoman for Greyhound, said Friday morning that the company wants to open up another station in Augusta as soon as possible.
