WESTBROOK — City officials gathered early this morning for a ceremony launching the construction of three homes for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland.

Workers use a crane to position the roof on the last of three steel houses that Habitat for Humanity is building on Bremen Street in Westbrook on Wednesday. The homes are pieced together at the site by using pre-manufactured framing panels; these were made by Porter Panel and Truss in Portland.

Former Mayor Bruce Chuluda cut the ribbon to the site on Bremen Street around 6:30 a.m., along with Mayor Colleen Hilton, City Administrator Jerre Bryant, and City Councilors Michael Foley and Paul Emery.

Workers from Porter Panel and Truss in Portland began constructing the three homes at 7 a.m. for Habitat's first of its kind initiative to build steel homes for low-income families.

One of the homes is for a Westbrook single mother of three children; the other two homes have not yet been sold. Habitat for Humanity officials say the homes are expected to be completed by this summer.
