PORTLAND — King Middle School Principal Mike McCarthy has been named Maine's 2010 Middle Level Principal of the Year by the Maine Principals’ Association, district officials announced today.
The award recognizes McCarthy's accomplishments as head of the middle school for 22 years in areas such as personal excellence, collaborative leadership, curriculum, instruction and assessment.
McCarthy is an expert on school reform who has written and presented widely, an adjunct professor of educational leadership at the University of Southern Maine and a national faculty member for Expeditionary Learning, the teaching model followed at King Middle.
“Mike McCarthy’s outstanding leadership and his unequivocal commitment to excellence in educating all students represent the very best qualities of the effective middle level principal in Maine and in the nation," said MPA Executive Director Richard Durost. "With vision and commitment, he and the staff he leads embody the school’s mission, which is to assure the success of each and every student with no exceptions.”
McCarthy will be honored at the MPA’s spring conference on April 29. He also will attend the national Principals’ Institute honoring all 2010 state principals of the year this fall in Washington, D.C., and is in the running for 2011 National Middle School Principal of the Year.
McCarthy has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of New Hampshire, a master’s degree in educational administration from Salem State College in Massachusetts, and a certificate of advanced study from the University of Maine.
Before King Middle, McCarthy was principal of Bonny Eagle Middle School in West Buxton for eight years, assistant principal at Waterville High School for three years and taught at Roberts Junior High School in Medford, Mass., for four years.
