PHOENIX — Arizona legislators are planning to head off any protests by a Topeka, Kan., church at the funeral services for the victims of Saturday’s shooting that killed six people.

Lawmakers are drafting emergency legislation for consideration by the full Legislature on Tuesday to prohibit protests at or near funeral sites.

The Westboro Baptist Church said it plans to picket the funeral Thursday for 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green. The fundamentalist church has picketed many military funerals to draw attention to their view that the deaths are God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

Arizona lawmakers are denouncing the church’s plan to protest. They’re modeling their legislation on an Ohio law that has been upheld in court.
