AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage says Mainers will be hearing more in the coming weeks about his plan to grade the state’s schools.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, LePage says the Department of Education has been working on the A-to-F grading plan. He says 13 states and New York City have adopted similar systems since Florida introduced it in 1999.

He says Maine’s grading system will be based on several factors, including student achievement in reading and math, growth in achievement, and performance and growth of the bottom 25 percent of students for elementary schools and the graduation rate for high schools.

In the Democratic response, House Majority Leader Seth Berry of Bowdoinham takes aim at the governor’s proposed budget, saying it includes the biggest tax shift in Maine history.
