TURNER

Woman fatally shot; police take husband into custody

Police say a Maine woman has been fatally shot and her husband is in custody.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland says Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputies were called to a house in Turner at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, where they found 38-year-old Jane Tetreault dead.

McCausland says Tetreault’s husband, 45-year-old Brian Nichols is in custody. He says one of the couple’s sons, who is 17, was at home at the time.

An autopsy was scheduled for today.

McCausland says the couple worked for the local Service Master franchise in Lewiston.

Two guardsmen hit the road to raise fitness awareness

Two National Guardsmen from Maine are embarking on a grueling mission – but it isn’t overseas.

Col. Jack Mosher of Waterville and Maj. Herbert Brock of Winslow are running 550 miles from Kittery to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. For the trek, they will each run 13.1 miles a day – the equivalent of 21 marathons in 21 days between them.

Their journey began Saturday. Along the way, the pair intends to visit veterans medical centers to tout the many programs that are available to returning soldiers.

Mosher and Brock say they are making the run to promote the idea that physical fitness builds resiliency for soldiers who are having a tough time after returning home from service overseas.

Gov. Baldacci cites examples of Maine’s response to crises

Gov. John Baldacci said Maine is prepared to offer assistance when help is needed elsewhere.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, the governor said two Maine businesses – Hannaford supermarkets and Poland Spring bottled water company – sent water to Massachusetts after a water main broke in the Boston area last weekend, putting drinking water in short supply.

And now the Portland-based Maine Responder oil spill cleanup vessel is on its way to help with the oil spill cleanup efforts in the Gulf of Mexico.

Baldacci said Maine “stands ready” to respond and offer any help when needed.
