LISBON FALLS
Teen killed in early morning single-vehicle accident
A Lisbon Falls teenager was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the town early Saturday.
Police said Andrew N. Chapman, 16, of Faith Street was killed when his vehicle struck a tree at 152 Main St. at 5:12 a.m.
Chapman was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and then flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he died late Saturday afternoon.
A passenger in the vehicle, Michael D. Coffin, 16, of Deerfoot Lane, Topsham, underwent surgery for serious injuries at Central Maine Medical Center, police said.
Passengers Judith Hursh, 15, and Alyssa Bourdreau, 18, both of 98 Main St., Lisbon Falls, were treated for injuries at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. Hursh was treated for multiple broken bones. Both were released.
Police said excessive speed was a factor in the accident, which is under investigation.
MACHIASPORT
Police warn about man who allegedly stole gun, cash
Maine State Police issued a warning to the public Sunday about a man who allegedly stole a handgun and vehicle from a Machiasport couple.
Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Jason Trickett, 42, is believed to have stolen a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee along with a loaded handgun and several hundred dollars from the couple after spending Saturday night at their home on Route 191.
The couple notified authorities Sunday morning that Trickett had disappeared with their vehicle and personal property. State police surmised that Trickett, a transient, may be headed to Bangor to buy drugs based on his past history of drug use.
Trickett was found not guilty in September of manslaughter in the stabbing death of a Bangor man in 2012. Because of his drug history and the stolen gun, state police consider him to be armed and dangerous, McCausland said.
Trickett is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is being urged to contact state police in Orono at 866-2211.

The Hannaford store in Topsham has recalled ground beef sold at the store on Saturday.
Small metal clips used in food packaging in an area where beef was ground that morning were detected at midday Saturday, according to a company news release. The store has removed all the ground beef made that morning. If customers bought ground beef at the store Saturday with a “use or freeze date” of Dec. 16, they are asked to return it for a full refund, the news release said.
The ground beef includes 90 percent, 85 percent and 73 percent lean sold in packages that range from a half pound to five pounds.
UNITY
Greenhouse operation donated to Unity College
Unity College is expanding its campus to include a greenhouse operation that was given to the school.
The college said it has been given Half Moon Gardens of Thorndike, a greenhouse operation that supports conventional and organic products.
The college is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the spring.
Officials say the facility will provide opportunities for students to study some of the agricultural challenges facing rural New England, like energy costs and sparse population density.
Half Moon Gardens was donated by Isabel McKay and Rick Thompson of Brooks and is the second-largest donation in the college’s history.
