Police arrest another man on indecent conduct charge

For the third time in seven days, Saco police arrested a man Monday after investigating a complaint about suspicious or indecent activity.

Roy I. Fortin, 57, of Biddeford was charged with indecent conduct after he allegedly exposed his genitals to an undercover police officer in a wooded area behind the commuter parking lot on Industrial Park Road.

Fortin was taken to the York County Jail in Alfred, said Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Holland. His first court appearance is set for July 24.

Last week, Saco police made two arrests.

On Tuesday, a man was arrested after police say he walked naked through the Cascade Brook trail system.

Daniel J. Latham, 54, of Yarmouth was seen by Police Chief Bradley Paul. Latham took off running but police say they caught up with him after a brief chase as he stopped to put on his pants. He was charged with indecent conduct.

On Thursday, police arrested Allen Hahn, 64, of Old Orchard Beach on a charge of unlawful sexual contact.

According to police, Hahn engaged an undercover officer in a brief conversation and then stepped toward the officer, grabbed the officer’s genitals though his clothing and said, “Are we doing this?”

Police have stepped up their patrol of Cascade Brook in response to complaints about illicit activity. All three arrests have occurred during daylight hours.

New cruise ship will make record-sized visit in 2015

The 2013 cruise season has yet to begin, but the city already is looking two years ahead.

Portland officials announced Monday that the city will welcome Royal Caribbean’s newest cruise ship, Quantum of the Seas, in 2015. At 1,142 feet and with a capacity for 4,180 passengers, it will be the largest passenger ship to dock in Portland – about 10 feet longer than the Queen Mary.

The Quantum was unveiled just last month by Royal Caribbean and will embark on its first tour in the winter of 2014.

Last year, more than 200,000 people visited Maine on cruise ships. Bar Harbor was the biggest draw with 108 stops, but Portland was second with 59.

This cruise season will begin June 1 when American Cruise Line’s ship Independence visits Portland. The first large cruise ship, the nearly 3,000-passenger Carnival Glory, will come on June 10.

In all, 58 ships are expected to dock in Portland from June through November, carrying more than 70,000 passengers and more than 28,000 crew members.

The city will receive nearly $700,000 in revenue from hosting cruise ships. A 2008 economic impact study found that passengers typically spend $80 to $110 in Greater Portland during their stay, which adds up to $5.8 million to $8 million each season.

SANFORD

Hannaford evacuated after produce case catches fire

The Hannaford supermarket at 800 Main St. was evacuated Monday morning after a refrigerated produce case caught fire.

Customers and workers had to leave the store at 10 a.m., said Capt. Gary Cushing of the Sanford Fire Department.

The fire was caused by a short circuit in a light fixture that illuminated the case. An employee used a chemical fire extinguisher to control the fire, which went out as soon as firefighters disconnected power to the area.

A Department of Agriculture inspector had to determine how much food had to be thrown out because of the use of the chemical extinguisher.
Nobody was hurt.

Employees were allowed back into the building at 10:30 a.m. The store reopened after 3 p.m., a Hannaford spokesman said.

An autopsy Saturday determined that Clifford was the victim of a homicide, although police did not release the cause of death.

On Monday, David Coon, 50, who lived at the same address, was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held in the Penobscot County jail.

BAR HARBOR

Road to Cadillac’s summit to open ahead of schedule

The road to the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park will open Saturday – a week ahead of schedule – thanks largely to support from the business community.

Park Superintendent Sheridan Steele announced Monday that the road to the peak will open even though federal budget cuts known as sequestration led to a reduction in Acadia’s seasonal staff. The rest of the Park Loop Road will open on May 17.

After sequestration hit, the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce approached park officials about offering volunteers to clean up the roadside and parking areas to get the park ready for visitors.
The concessioner who operates the gift shop on top of Cadillac has agreed to open Saturday as well, the park announced.

Acadia National Park draws about 2 million visitors to Mount Desert Island every year and is among the most visited areas of Maine from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
