AUGUSTA — The commissioner of the agency that oversees state parks, public lands and wildlands development in Maine will be sworn into office today.

Elizabeth Townsend has been serving as acting commissioner since Patrick McGowan vacated the spot in January to run for governor. She’ll be sworn in by Gov. John Baldacci.

Before joining the Conservation Department, Townsend was executive director of the Maine League of Conservation Voters and the Maine Conservation Voters Education Fund.

She also served previously a state representative. While in the Legislature, the Portland resident served as House chair of the Appropriations Committee.
