A Maine lake has been declared ice-free earlier in the season than any other year in 136 years of record-keeping.
Officials with the Auburn Water District declared Lake Auburn “ice-out” on Monday, meaning the lake is virtually clear of ice.
The Sun Journal of Lewiston says the previous earliest ice-out date was March 30, in 1981. That’s eight days later than this year.
Since 1874 the water district has been keeping track of the date the lake opens for boating. Ice didn’t clear from the lake until May 14 that year, which remains the record for the latest ice-out date.
