PORTLAND — Scientists are getting help from Maine lobstermen to study herring populations in Maine’s coastal waters.
The Maine Technology Institute announced today it has awarded a $532,000 grant to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland for herring research.
Herring catch limits have been cut because of scientific uncertainty, but that’s driven up prices for lobstermen, who use them as bait.
For the research project, 10 lobster boats will use sonar equipment to survey coastal waters next summer and fall.
Scientists from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute will analyze the data to generate herring population estimates and work with state and federal scientists and managers to incorporate data into the resource assessment.
