Maine pawn shop owner charged with 1998 murder

The Associated Press

PRESQUE ISLE — State police have arrested a 75-year-old pawn shop owner in northern Maine in the 13-year-old killing of a woman whose body was never located.

Police say George Jaime Sr. of Presque Isle was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with murder in the 1998 death of Starlett "Star" Vining.

Investigators say Vining and Jaime were in a relationship when she went missing. She was 38 years old, divorced and had three children.

Jaime's business, The Star City Trading Post, is located in a large apartment house that police have been searching since Monday. Details about the investigation will be contained in an affidavit released Friday.

Jaime, who owns the property, was taken to the Aroostook County Jail where he couldn't be reached. It was unknown if he'd hired an attorney.

Jaime was due in court Friday in Houlton.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Detective Adam Stoutamyer with the Maine State Police at 532-5400 or 800-924-2261.
