LEWISTON — Maine State Police have charged a 23-year-old Lewiston man with killing another man and dumping his body in a stream in Monmouth.

Michael McNaughton is charged with killing 20-year-old Romeo Parent in Greene on Tuesday and dumping his body below a dam in Jug Stream, possibly on Wednesday. Police say the two men were friends.

State police dogs found the body on Friday afternoon in less than 10 feet of water. Members of the department’s dive team aided in the recovery of the body.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta is expected to conduct an autopsy Saturday to determine how Parent died.

Parent had attended Lewiston High School and worked at a Dunkin’ Donuts. His parents live in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

McNaughton, who has no prior criminal convictions, is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn without bail. It’s unclear if he is being represented by a lawyer. He will make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
