Maine man charged with threatening to shoot wife, judge

AUGUSTA — A South China man accused of threatening to shoot his wife and a district court judge is scheduled for an initial court appearance today on two terrorizing charges.

Shawn R. Breton, 37, faces two counts of terrorizing for allegedly threatening Judge Beth Dobson and Jessie Breton, 32, also of South China.

Capt. Dan Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office said Breton was arrested at 12:55 p.m. Wednesday at Augusta District Court.

Davies said Breton was apparently angry that Dobson denied his request for a protection from abuse order.

Breton allegedly told a county employee as he was leaving the building that he "was going to come back and shoot Judge Dobson and then go shoot my wife," Davies said in a press release.

Breton, who was not armed, then left the building but returned shortly afterward and was arrested by Sgt. Joel Eldridge, a court security supervisor with the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office.

"Breton reportedly attempted to justify his earlier threats by saying he didn't mean what he said and that he was simply angry over being denied the protection order and not being able to see his child," Davies said in the release.

Breton is being held in Kennebec County jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.

"Apparently (the Bretons) have a pretty lengthy and convoluted relationship," Davies said Thursday. "I was told this was the fourth attempt at obtaining a protection order."
