BANGOR — A Maine man has been sentenced to three years in prison for fraudulently obtaining veterans’ disability benefits from the federal government.

Richard Ramsdell Jr. of Cutler was also ordered Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Bangor to pay almost $143,000 in restitution to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Ramsdell had pleaded guilty in January.

Prosecutors say the 38-year-old Ramsdell obtained VA benefits by falsely claiming to be unemployed and unable to work because of his back and mental condition.

Authorities say he was, in fact, working for a wreath manufacturer and as a fisherman and painter during that time.
