AUGUSTA — A suspect in Wednesday morning’s home invasion in Palermo is behind bars in Wiscasset, police said.
Donald York Jr., 30, of Knox, was arrested on five separate charges as he was being released from MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Augusta hospital following treatment for injuries suffered in that incident.
Waldo County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Jeffery Trafton said he expects York to be charged with aggravated criminal mischief, aggravated criminal trespass, assault, burglary and violating conditions of release.
York is accused of breaking into a Carrs Corner Road home just before 4:18 a.m. Wednesday, when the sound of breaking glass awoke the sleeping homeowner and a male occupant.
Trafton said York appeared to be out of control and combative, and authorities suspect he may have been on the drug known as bath salts.
York confronted the man, and the resulting injuries sent both men to separate hospitals, police said.
It took a state trooper and county deputies to help restrain the man, Trafton said. “He was so heavily involved in struggling. He was just so crazed,” he said.
Trafton did not know what injuries York sustained, but a mugshot from the jail shows a number of cuts on York’s face.
Trafton said investigators suspect — but have not confirmed — that the home invader was on the drug known as bath salts, “because his behavior was so erratic.”
The homeowner was not injured, he said, and the man who had fought the intruder was treated at a hospital for his injuries.
The incident remains under investigation, and Trafton said a detective is getting a search warrant for York’s medical records to check the theory that he was using bath salts.
Trafton said York’s criminal history includes a previous conviction for assault and several convictions for operating after revocation.
When the latest incident occurred, York was on bail conditions out of Kennebec County.
