Baldacci raises school
aid projections – again

AUGUSTA — Gov. John Baldacci today proposed allocating an additional $5 million in state aid to public schools for the budget year starting July 1, according to the Maine Department of Education.

Baldacci responded to the U.S. Senate's action earlier this week that extended enhanced Medicaid funding included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for an additional six months. The move gave Maine $46 million more than anticipated.

Baldacci recently increased school aid for 2010-11 by $20 million based on improved revenue projections.

All told, Baldacci plans to restore $25 million of an intended $35 million reduction in school aid in the coming year.

The Maine Department of Education will distribute a revised spreadsheet next week showing how much aid each school will receive.
