AUGUSTA — Maine state police are warning motorists that troopers will be out in force for the holiday weekend.
Col. Robert Williams, state police chief, says Memorial Day weekend sets the tone for the summer season and that the state police goal “is to make it a safe one.” He says troopers will be looking for speeders and drunken and aggressive drivers, and that they’re also enforcing seat belt and texting laws.
All told, 83 other local and county police agencies are taking part in the “Buckle Up – No Excuses” campaign. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has distributed about $178,000 in federal funding for the campaign.
Two people were killed in traffic crashes during last year’s Memorial Day weekend and three people died during the holiday weekend in 2011.
