Maine waterway deemed OK for LNG tankers

PORTLAND — The Coast Guard says waters leading to a proposed liquefied natural gas facility in the eastern Maine town of Calais are suitable for LNG vessels.

The Coast Guard said today it is recommending to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that waterways associated with Calais LNG's proposal for a $1 billion facility in Calais are suitable for the project. For its 88-page analysis, the Coast Guard assessed safety and security issues for tankers transiting Passamaquoddy Bay and the St. Croix River.

Calais LNG hopes to develop a 330-acre site, but has yet to submit a completed application for the project to the Maine Bureau of Environmental Protection.
