A woman was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly firing a gunshot at a Somerset County sheriff’s deputy from the doorway of a New Portland home, police said.

The deputy, David Cole, was not injured.

Cole later tackled Bonnie Jean Tanguay, 34, of Cole Grove Road, and took her into custody. She is charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony, police said.

Police said Tanguay was armed with a 9 mm handgun. Lancaster said police still are investigating but believe Tanguay’s mental health might have been a factor in the shooting.

The incident began around 11 p.m. Tuesday with a 911 call to the Franklin County Emergency Communication Center in Farmington, said Dale Lancaster, chief deputy with the county sheriff’s department. He said Tanguay, originally from Jefferson, N.H., had been living at the home in New Portland.

When she made the 911 call, Tanguay seemed “extremely vague” about the reason for the call, according to Lancaster. When Cole arrived, the house was dark. Cole got out of his cruiser and Tanguay appeared at the front entrance and fired a gunshot in Cole’s direction, according to Lancaster.

“Tanguay then retreated back into the home,” Lancaster said. “Deputy Cole took cover and called for assistance.”

Lancaster said Tanguay appeared in the doorway again with the gun in her hand, but Cole got close enough to her and tackled her.

Tanguay was taken to the Somerset County Jail. She made an initial appearance in court about 2 p.m. Wednesday via video, according to a jail intake worker.
