ALLAGASH — Eight individuals from northern Maine have been either charged or arrested in connection with illegal hunting in the town of Allagash, a level of poaching that state game wardens said “undoubtedly had an impact on local wildlife resources.”

The Maine Warden Service said the individuals are accused of poaching deer and moose, and charged with a variety of crimes, including hunting with a suspended license, illegal possession of moose, possession of a firearm by a felon and hunting deer after already having killed a deer. Maine law allows a hunter to kill only one deer when hunting with a rifle.

“The suspects charged in this investigation are intentional wildlife violators who display a complete disregard for our fish and game laws,” Lt. Dan Scott of the Maine Warden Service said in a news release Thursday.

Maine State Police troopers assisted game wardens with their investigation. Authorities obtained search warrants Wednesday night, which enabled them to search homes in Allagash and in Palermo. More charges could be filed. Those charged are:

• Carter McBrearity, 57, of Allagash, charged with hunting deer after having killed one (Class D crime).

• Kim Hafford, 53, of Allagash, charged with false registration of deer (Class E crime).

• Jess McBrearity, 50, of Allagash, charged with hunting with a suspended license, and arrested for violation of bail (both Class D crimes).

• Reid J. Caron, 36, of Allagash, arrested on a warrant for hunting moose at night (Class D crime).

• Hope Kelly, 63, of Allagash, charged with possession of a moose killed at night (Class D crime) and possession of an unregistered moose (Class E crime).

• Gregory Hughes, 63 of Allagash, charged with possession of a firearm by a felon (Class C crime).

• Arlo Caron, 73, of Allagash, charged with unlawful possession of gift deer (Class E crime).

• Gerald M. Pollard, 57, of Palermo, charged with illegal possession of moose (Class E crime).
