AUGUSTA — Mainers are getting their opportunity to have a say about competing congressional redistricting proposals from Republicans and Democrats.

Both parties hoped to have a single plan to offer up for comment today at the State House. Instead, there are two proposals because the parties failed to reach a compromise agreement last week.

The GOP raised eyebrows when it originally proposed shifting the voting districts of 300,000 people and moving Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree of North Haven to the 2nd District.

Revised plans were submitted last week but there was no consensus.

The Legislature set an Aug. 31 deadline for the Reapportionment Commission to submit a plan; a special legislative session will take up the proposal Sept. 27.
