DEDHAM, Mass. — A man who eluded justice for decades after being convicted of raping three women in Massachusetts is due in court after being captured in Maine.

Gary Alan Irving faced a possible life sentence after being convicted in 1979 of three counts of rape and kidnapping. He went on the run after a judge allowed him to return home to make final arrangements before sentencing.

The 52-year-old Irving was arrested late last month in Gorham, Maine, where he had been living for years.

On Friday, a judge in Norfolk Superior Court is expected to hear arguments on a media request to release Irving’s criminal court file. The judge is also expected to get an update on Irving’s legal counsel.
