Mass. state trooper shoots driver at traffic stop

The man was inside his vehicle and the trooper was outside of his cruiser at the time of the shooting.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a Worcester man by a state trooper who had pulled him over to check a stolen car report.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said Thursday that 43-year-old Victor Davila was shot once in the chest through the windshield as he drove the stolen car toward the trooper, who was on foot outside his cruiser.

A woman in the car fled and is still on the loose.

Early said the trooper had pulled over the 1997 gray Honda Accord just after midnight near downtown Worcester. He said a Leominster man had reported the car as stolen.

State police spokesman David Procopio said the trooper ordered Davila to stop driving at him and shot because he "feared for his safety."

The trooper's name has not been released.
