FREEPORT — The Merriconeag Waldorf School is graduating its first 12th grade class Saturday, marking 25 years as a Waldorf School in southern Maine.

The commencement ceremony is the end result of the school's founding board and parents' dream when they started the school in 1984.
In keeping with the school's ideal of honoring the unfolding individual in every student, each of the five graduating seniors are expected to give a brief address, followed by the commencement address by Dr. Douglas Gerwin, a long-time mentor to the high school and founder of the Waldorf High School Teacher Education Program in Wilton, N.H.

Students graduating include Norajean Ferris, of Cumberland, Zakary Konstantino, of Freeport, James Lyscars, of Portland, William Morse, of Yarmouth, and Lily O'Brien, of Pownal.

This is the only Waldorf High School in Maine with a focus on preparing students to meet the world through meeting themselves. The program cultivates multiple intelligences geared toward each grade through a holistic approach. It is part of a world-wide Waldorf school movement that encompasses more than 1,000 schools and 1,600 early childhood programs on five continents.
