ELLSWORTH — A brother and sister from Ellsworth who went missing after sledding near their home have been found safe and sound.

The pair, both under 10 years of age, took advantage of the season’s first heavy snowfall to have some fun, but their parents got concerned when they didn’t return home by 5 p.m. Thursday.

Their mother contacted a state trooper she knew and a search was initiated involving state and local police, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine Warden Service.

Authorities tracked their footprints and eventually found them at about 7 p.m. a mile or so from their home.

They were checked out as a precaution, but authorities say they were mostly just scared.
