York beachgoers were treated to an unusual sight this morning when a large moose made its way into the water, swam for awhile, then slipped back into the woods.

The moose first was reported at 8 a.m. on Ridge Road walking toward the high school, then it was spotted swimming out off Long Beach, said dispatcher Nathaniel Higgins.

The moose got out near the bathhouse, took a run up around Airport Drive and then reappeared at Short Sands before slipping away near the sewer district, he said.

The beach was already filling with bathers but nobody was in danger, he said.

“Hopefully, it’s made its way back into the woods,” he said. The moose may have been spooked out of its normal territory by Thursday’s intense storms, he said.
