RUMFORD — Unbeaten Mountain Valley rode the strength of its defense to win its fifth Western Maine Class B football championship in seven years this afternoon.

The Falcons (11-0) shut down a potent Wells offense and turned good field position into three touchdowns, beating the Warriors 18-0 at Chet Bulger Field.

Mountain Valley, which has won state championships in 2004, 2006 and 2008, will play the Eastern Maine winner next Saturday at Portland’s Fitzpatrick Stadium.

The Falcons led 12-0 after one half on touchdown runs of 11 yards by Josh Allen and five yards by Tyler Mason.

After the Warriors had two touchdowns called back because of holding penalties in the third quarter, Cam Kaubris intercepted a pass at the 2 and returned it to the Falcons 45.

Kaubris then scored on a 1 -yard run with 4:17 left to secure the win.
