NH town sprays to combat virus-carrying mosquitoes

SANDOWN, N.H. — Officials in Sanborn are hoping spraying will control mosquitoes in the New Hampshire community where some were found to be carrying a virus that can be fatal to humans.

Tests of mosquitoes last month in Sandown discovered Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Sandown is located in Rockingham County.

On Sunday, technicians sprayed the Roy L. Miller Recreational Center, Sandown Central School, Sandown North School and the Garvey Recreational Center.

WMUR-TV reports signs are posted across town warning people of the danger.

Mosquitoes carrying the virus have also been reported in Maine and Vermont.

The Vermont Health Department recently reported the state's first two cases in humans.

People infected with the virus can chills, fever, malaise and joint and muscle pain. A more severe form of the illness affects the central nervous system and can cause death.
