The Navy has awarded an $8 million contract to design and build a new Marine Corps Reserve Center on land that was part of the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
The facility will house A Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine, 4th Marine Division and will include a specially designed weapons storage area, according to a release from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command.
The new facility enables the Marine company to remain in Maine and will allow it to partner with the Maine Army National Guard for drills.
The new facility will comply with anti-terrorism and force protection requirements that the former facility in Topsham did not. The building also is designed to have less environmental impact than previous projects by having a geothermal heating and cooling system, high-efficiency lighting, treated stormwater runoff and interior construction that emits little or no volatile organic compounds, the release said.

Just another example of the great job this paper does reporting the news. Here is an idea. How about getting all the facts before posting an story. I see now why I cancelled my subscription. Need to be the first to report something, change the content a couple times later in the day when you figure out the real details/story, post it again tomorrow because you can't find any real news to report on... The new ownership is doing a great job....

Huh, only $8 million. That job got trimmed down from the projected $12.9 million. And Chew, that was my first question as well. I'm sure it went to some out of state firm.

Congratulations to whoever won the competitive bid. Bids were due in mid-March with an estimated cost by the Navy of $13 million.

Note: Obviously this is an elite reserve unit to get a new building like that. Last month the Marine Corps' Mountain Warfare Training Center published an article on the training that the company went through as they prepare for possible deployment to Afghanistan next year. A course instructor was quoted, “The mountains wreck havoc on equipment and personnel that guys in Iraq can’t even imagine.” The article is titled "Train Like You Fight: 1/25 Marines take on IED training during exercise Javelin Thrust 2010," http://www.usmc.mil/unit/marforres/Pages/TrainLikeYouFight.aspx

Josey+Wales: The Defense Dept. was reportedly hoarding funds in case the supplemental to fund the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq didn't pass the Congress. The $13 billion appropriation for Vietnam veterans affected by Agent Orange was also caught up in the extended spat between the House and Senate.

Semper Fi!!! Same guys that complain about the deficit and extending unemployment benefits are the same who clap and say horray horray for 8 mil spent for what exactly? The defense budget is out of control. The deficit is out of control. The military industrial complex is out of control. And you guys probably want to extend the Bush Tax cuts for those earning over $250,000 a year. Because Glen Beck told you to.

Looks like the Navy don't want to let the base go entirely. Stupied move to close the base down in the first place.
